These are surprise ribs, because I made them without following any particular recipe and the result is surprisingly good. Fast, easy and delicious, what else could you ask for? I’m trying to give you quantities, but truth be told, I added the ingredients “a ojo de buen cubero” (by guesswork), so feel free to change the quantities and/or ingredients to your taste. One more thing, back ribs are better than spare ribs for this dish because they have more meat. Ingredients 1 kg pork ribs2 tablespoons …

Over the Christmas holidays and festive celebrations, I was pondering the concept of the word family and what it means… It got me thinking about its boundaries and the people this word affects. More importantly, we need to understand who our families are, how and what we do influences the family and the overall idea.

First off, what comes to mind when we think of the word ‘Family’? There are several interpretations: a close-knit unit, a group of loving people, blood-relation. Commonly, we see it as a blood-related group of people that share emotional, physical and financial relations with one another, ranging from three to fifteen people… IN SOME CASES (to be explained in due time), it can be even larger than that! In a modern-day era, the term is mostly subjective in the idea and therefore is quite flexible to suit one’s needs and/or emotions and I couldn’t be happier with this outcome. Regardless of what we are TOLD is the meaning of family, as we get older we develop our own thoughts and opinions, as is natural when we grow up and become more individual. When you think about it, most of us cannot recall where the word family came from (unless you’re a historian or history wiz) and it does get you questioning.

In religious views, family is a sanctity of a married man and women who have procreated offspring, commonly a family of 4. As most of us consider ourselves atheist and agnostic, leaving only the fanatical religious followers keeping up this tradition, we disregard this and create our own versions of families purely based on who we care about. If such an idea of free will and individuality didn’t exist, this slims down adoption rates as well as psychologically supressing our thoughts and emotions. Gay people in particular are supressed by religion and is often seen as immoral to have a relationship with someone of the same gender, which to me is not right because I honestly believe that we can all be good people no matter of who we are dating/courting, or who we are as a person.

Which leads me onto my next point in terms of family- Parents. Does it really matter if a child has two male parents or two female parents? To me, as long as both the parents love eachother and the child, then that is more than enough to keep a happy family household and I would strongly back and lesbian/gay couples rights to adopting a child, because denial of this is denial of our freedom of expression, as well as denial of a safe and healthy living enviroment for the child. I am not saying that Orphanages are bad places, but it’s better and happier for children to find homes with loving parents. On the 9th of June 2010, a writer of pinknews.co.uk called Jessica Geen wrote an article on Gay parenting and the Prejudice at schools for adoptees. The first paragraph of the article goes

“The qualitative research follows the publication of a 17-year study on children brought up by lesbian couples, which found they were happier and had fewer behavioural problems than children brought up by straight parents.”

It is worth a read as the children and teenagers being studied said they were proud of their gay parents and that their families are “special.”

Children of gay parents ‘proud, but need schools to tackle issues’

What I’m trying to address, is that kids are happy with gay parents… In fact most cases would say that they’re happier than with a straight couple. Don’t you see? It’s love and care that make a family, not blood relations or religion. It does not matter who you are or where you’re from, because your family is whoever you want them to be, so long as you love oneanother… And if I remember correctly, one of the commandments says to “love thy neighbour”? So if the church denies gay marriage or gay parenting, then they’re denying one of their most foundational rules. Tell THAT to them!

With this is mind, I come to my third and final point, which I have entitled ‘Friendship Love’. When you have a best friend that you care for so much, that you deem them to be like a sister/brother to you. You feel a certian level of trust and respect from the other person and they’re not even blood-related to you and if the sanctity of the family was meant to stick to old-time traditions, then this “God” wouldn’t give us such thoughts. I am atheist currently and as far as I’m concerned, I can lead a good and happy life without being weighed down by religious rules and nonsense, where the bible is just contradicting with itself since it often states you must make sacrifices/offerings to please God or he will bring down his wrath upon us… And that is just a load of @&!”. Personally, I have 3 friends whom I met over the internet that I have talked to for several years and we’ve shared, pictures, conversations and moments, that I see them as sisters: I care for them and I do my best to support them if they need me. For those who ask me “what if they’re a paedophile?”… Trust me, I have been careful and everyone should be careful on the internet. Regardless of that, I have found people I care about and I now consider them family, no matter of how they dress or what they wear.

So pay attention people, this is important! Family is more than what you may think, it is a bond of love and caring for who people are as a person and nothing else. When we spend time with a certain someone, or certain people and we grow to accept them and sometimes even love them for it. You should not feel ashamed to express who you are and you should always let that special person or people know how you feel about them. If you’re a gay couple, go ahead and adopt since it will make more than just you happy. If you have a best friend who you have cherished forever, let them know how much they mean to you.

As my final statement: “Family is not about blood-relation, but a bond of love one shares with another, regardless of family ties or personal background. Blood may be thicker than water, but you need that water to keep everything flowing.”

This Christmas I went to Panama after 9 years of absence. I live in Madrid and with 4 children and a husband a trip to Panama is something you have to meditate on and save for. Well, that’s what we did last year, so off we went on the 23rd; the whole family, including my parents in law (it was their first time in Panama).

One of the main reasons to go was to celebrate the 15 years of my daughter Pilar. For me is very important to keep the traditions with which I grew up as a child, and there were only one place to properly celebrate Pilar’s quinceaños: Panama.

The party was great, very similar, I guess, to the sweet sixteen parties at the US, but we did something different. I cousin of mine (well, his wife Jessie) arranged for Pilar and Isabel to wear the traditional dress of Panama, the Pollera. We went to my cousin’s place and got Pilar dressed, then we went to the ruins of the first settlement of Panama City, usually called “Panama la Vieja”. I took the photographs and despite the heat, everything went great.

Here I bring some photographs and an excerpt of the book “The pollera from Panama” written by Dora P. de Zarate where she explains the origin of this garment.

ORIGIN AND HISTORY OF THE POLLERA

Many people have spoken about the pollera. Some have indicated the exact point of origin for the costume, but such exactness is not compatible with folk material since one of the main characteristics of folklore is spontaneous and anonymous origin. When people become aware of the existence of a folk tradition, a great deal of time has already passed during which the tradition has grown and developed. The pollera had an origin. Along with the other traditional Latin American dresses, the pollera descended from the Spanish dress of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. In response to our investigation into the origin of the pollera, Miss Nieves de Hoyos, director of the Museo del Pueblo Español, published an article, “La Pollera Panameña,” in the Revista de Indias of December, 1963. She wrote,

“I sincerely believe the answer is simple; the origin is in Spain, but not from the regional Spanish dress, which contrary to general opinion did not develop its current form until the eighteenth century or later. The pollera in Panama evolved from the Spanish feminine dress of the seventeenth century, not from the court dress with its grand hoops covered with velvets and embroidered silks embellished with laces, gold, and silver threads – the dress which immediately comes to mind to most people because they have frequently seen the pictures of Velazquez. In the seventeenth century, as in any other time, contemporary with the beautiful court dresses there was the daily house dress, which in this epoch was generally white with a full skirt of two or three ruffles embroidered or appliqued in floral designs. This description is, simply, the pollera.

As for the pollera montuna or the dress for daily use, a cotton skirt printed in floral design is commonly used in tropical climates and during summer seasons in colder regions. We should think of the skirts from Andalucía, but not of the close-fitting ruffled skirt of the flamenco dancers, nor the traditional cloth of the mountain regions – rather of the skirt of the common women in any city, who used a pollera montuna. In the Museo del Pueblo Español there is a woman’s dress of Cordoba, made of percale with a small printed pattern, very full and with a ruffle, which cannot be differentiated from the pollera montuna of Panama. The complicated hair style which uses gold combs makes us think of the hair styles from Valencia and Salamanca where they do not use combs but large, richly decorated pins. Naturally the hair style and hair ornaments found in Panama would not be an imitation, but with the passage of time they would change and acquire a character different from their Spanish predecessors.”

The important fact is the originality and direction the dress developed in Panama, which made it distinct from typical dresses in other Latin countries with similar roots in Spain. It is known that the same seed can produce fruit of different flavor and quality according to the earth in which it falls and the conditions under which it grows. In Panama, time, various ethnic groups, geography, and climate combined to transform our dress into the attractive and pleasing pollera we see today.

How did the pollera come to be the dress it is today? At what moment did the dress of our Spanish or mestizo grandmothers change into this lovely dress of the tropics? The answer lies in the passage of time, which allowed a gradual evolution of the pollera into what we have today.

THE POLLERA, A DRESS OF THE COMMON PEOPLE

After reading the references left by writers interested in the pollera, it is possible to appreciate one important fact; every writer insisted that it was the dress of the lower classes. Lady Mallet described it as “the usual attire of the woman servants; it was especially the dress of the wet nurses who nursed the children of the family. The dress was generally white, almost without adornments. The cooks and wash ladies used colored skirts, usually purple, with a white blouse. . . It was a custom among some families to decorate the clothes of the domestic help with special types of handwork; some used an embroidery stitch, others a cross-stitch, and others applique.”

If we pay special attention to the article in the Diario de Madrid referring to celebrations here in Panama mentioned by D. Samuel Lewis, we find it speaks of thirty women of the town richly dressed in polleras. It does not say the higher class, but the townspeople. Reclus also referred to the town: “the colored women wear the pollera” and “the women wear the old dress of the criollas.” Who are the criollas for Reclus? The person born in America of Spanish descent? The native aristocracy? From the drawings he presents in his writings, the criolla appears to be neither Spanish nor the native aristocracy. The pollera was the dress of the common people, and here lies its strength, its continuity, and its permanence. As a creation of the common people, it reflected the vitality and spirit of that class, and extended into every city, town, and farm. From its humble beginning the pollera gradually was adopted by the women in the upper classes. Once accepting the pollera, this class adopted it as their own almost as if it had always been their traditional costume. Today the daughters of the aristocracy are just as proud to wear their polleras during days of fiestas as the women in rural areas”.

Christmas, everywhere it is celebrated, is generally the same. People go crazy, traffic is insane, the malls are hell, and everyone wants-wants-wants! Even with all of these similarities, there are difference from place to place. Some are subtle, and others are blatant. On that note, I’d like to share a few little tidbits about Christmas in the Bahamas, namely Nassau (the capital).

The Christmas “dinner” is really LUNCH. People are sitting down eating some time between 12 and 3pm.

The items on the menu include the traditional American ham, turkey, and stuffing, but also has native favourites like macaroni (baked with cheese, butter, and cream), peas ‘n’ rice, potato salad, and mutton (goat).

Shopping is hell since we only have two malls. One of them is the graveyard of has-been stores. The other is over-run with people – with money and without. People enjoying milling around and rushing around the mall, whether they plan to make purchases or not.

Christmas trees are ordered and shipped here. I think most of them come from Nova Scotia, Canada. We do not grow our own trees, so no family goes to the Christmas tree farm to pick and cut down its own tree. We just watch that stuff on television.

Christmas time is synonymous with Junkanoo. Junkanoo is a huge festival held in the streets. It’s a competition, really. Lots of groups spend the entire year in what we call “Junkanoo shacks” pasting costumes (decorating the cardboard and foam pieces with crepe paper, beads, and feathers), choosing music, and choreographing dances. They do this to put on a world class show on Bay Street (main street downtown, Nassau). No pictures you find in Google images or video you can find on YouTube will give you a feeling anywhere near being on Bay Street, experiencing it. FEELING the RUSH. But you can try. Search away! :)

Christmas is a time of merry making and festivities. It is that time of the year when stress is related to shopping for gifts or staying all day at the mall searching for that perfect holiday dress. We focus on the joy and the holiday cheer that overcomes almost every one of us. We’re caught up in the season that we always think that nothing would go wrong.

But life being as unpredictable as it is, would sometimes force us to deal with things that we never thought we’d have to deal with. More than that, in the midst of all the parties and celebrations, one wouldn’t know if somebody’s heart is breaking or if another is dealing with a great loss.

Last Friday night, I was thinking of what I was going to wear for our company Christmas party. I had a nice full dinner and slept peacefully with nothing but anticipation for what the next day was going to bring.

In another part of my country, people were sleeping soundly as well not knowing that when they wake up, they would be left with nothing. Some may never even have woken up.

It was December 16, 2011 when tropical storm Washi (local name Sendong) wrecked havoc in the southern Philippines and destroyed not only homes but families as well. As of now, an estimate of more than 1000 people are dead while a big sum are still missing. With death tolls rising, local government decided to hold a mass burial for all the victims of the storm. Funeral parlors were running out of coffins and the bodies are piling up everyday.

I knew what happened but it was only tonight when I saw the pictures that I saw the gravity of the situation. You know how it is when you hear news over the radio or have it passed from one person to another? It becomes a blurry image of the reality. That is why it is only now when I saw clear images of the situation that I realized that it is real and that people have lost so much.

Every Christmas, I see articles about understanding the true meaning of the season – that Jesus was born on earth to save us from our sins and to offer us redemption; hope. Every Christmas, we get blinded by the pretty lights, the fancy gifts and the glamorous events.

Redemption. Hope. Faith. Love. These are the values that Jesus gave to man when He saved His children from condemnation. This Christmas, why don’t we go past the twinkling lights, the decorated trees and perfectly wrapped gifts? This Christmas, why don’t you offer your prayers, your heart and whatever you can give to send warmth to these people who have suffered so much?

Nobody deserves to be alone on Christmas. Moreso, nobody should be overtaken with so much sorrow and grief. My heart bleeds for all the children who have lost their mothers and fathers; to those parents who have lost their kids. We complain of not having enough money for all the gifts we want to give yet these people have lost more.

The world is a big place with people of different nationalities, races and cultures. But like this blog, we are still neighbors in a global sense.

Let’s help each other. Let’s help them.

The greatest gift we can ever give this Christmas are the ones that can’t be bought.

Writer’s block, it’s that dreaded thing that happens to all bloggers at some point.

Writer’s block, it’s that dreaded thing that happens to all bloggers at some point. You struggle to just come up with ideas and sometimes when you get those ideas you can’t even wrap your head around how to express them. It’s a pain and believe me when I say I’ve been there before. I’m sure many of you have as well.

The important thing is to not let yourself get discouraged when writer’s block sets in. Discouragement + Writer’s Block = No Motivation. At least that’s been my observation. One of my bigger regrets is that I let writer’s block nearly ruin my blog. I was in the midst of a drought of ideas and basically posting funny pictures or obscure news facts. It felt like I wasn’t putting any of myself into my blogging. Once that feeling set in I stopped writing and that lasted for almost 10 months.

The nice thing about taking a 10 month hiatus is that I came back refreshed, the bad thing is that I had let my blog grow stagnant and lost readers. From that point on, I decided to do whatever I could to ensure I never let my blog just wither away and die due to my writer’s block and inability to put together ideas. The biggest piece of advice I can give to any blogger is to not let writer’s block or a lack of ideas take you over.

Lately I’ve come up with a few ways to try to alleviate writer’s block and make sure that my blog stays active. I’ll share some of them below, but please if you have any other suggestions please put them in the comments below. Your comments could be just the tool needed by another blogger to get re-motivated.

Find a way to decompress. For me that’s taking my dog out for a walk, reading a book, or plugging in a video game. Pretty much anything to take my mind off of writing and maybe get a new perspective.

Read your friend’s blogs. Sometimes commenting on other blogs can be enough to spark an idea. In the past I’ve commented on a semi-controversial post and that’s sparked an idea within me that I take and run with. Sometimes your fellow bloggers can really kick-start your writing spirit.

Search the web for interesting topics. In all honestly, Twitter has been a great tool for coming up with new ideas. Looking at what topics are trending gives great ideas. Twitter only allows people to use 140 characters to express an opinion and these short opinions can be the seed of a great idea.

Talk to your friends. Talk to some of your friends via e-mail, Facebook, Twitter, or whatever method you like. Catch up and see what’s new in their lives. Sometimes just hearing about what is going on with others with reignite your creative spirit.

Go old-fashioned and use pen and paper. I don’t know about you all but writing on paper makes me think differently. I write a little slower and more deliberately. I think this is mostly because writing with a pen is much slower than typing. It puts me in a different frame of mind that can be helpful.

Offer to guest blog for someone. Bear with me a sec as this might seem a little crazy. I’ve guest blogged for Tom Baker twice. The first time I stuck to my comfort zone of writing a SciFi/nerdy topic. The second time I was deep in writer’s block and tried to come up with a topic outside my comfort zone. Forcing myself to write about things I normally don’t was very helpful to me. That’s one of the things I like about writing on Flavor Internationale is that its a different kind of topics for me.

Poll your readers for ideas. I’ve not done this yet, but the next time I have a bad case of writer’s block I plan to create a post asking my reader’s what they want to hear about or what topics they find interesting. It’s a good way to get new ideas and to connect directly with your audience.

I’m sure you’ve all caught on by now, this post was an elaborate way for me to try to get over my own writer’s block. I think it might have even worked! Please add any other ideas for curing writer’s block in the comments below. I think it would be invaluable to many other writers in the blogosphere.

I missed the Meme event! I wish I could have posted right along with everyone else, but life has been CRAZY. My mother has been in the hospital for almost two weeks, and I ended up spending the weekend there with her. I should have taken my computer with me, but I didn’t. *sighs* Sooo… I’m gonna answer the questions here and now. I figure it’s a good way to introduce myself as one of the bloggers here at Flavor Internationale.

1. As a blogger, what do you draw inspirations from for your posts?

Every day life, really. I don’t really think about it much. A lot of times, I experience things, and one of my first thoughts is, “I HAVE to (remember to) blog about this!” I keep things very real. Very honest. Nothing I write on my blog is dreamed up or imagined or embellished. Well, that’s UNLESS that’s what the post is about. :) There are also lots of times that I read other people’s blogs and get ideas. Comments also give me lots of material to work with. Reading other blogs and comments really gets my brain goin’.

2. If you could swap blogs with another blogger for a post, who would you switch with and why?

Hmmm… I think I’d swap with Ruthie over at Just Rambling. She’s awesome, fun, and funny. She always has feel-good and giggle type posts.

3. If your blog had a theme song, what would it be? Why?

Tough onnnnne! Hmmm… *thinks really hard* I think I’d have to go with Firework by Katy Perry. LOVE that song.

4. What is your writing process for a post?

JUST DO IT! I write the post. Then I go back and make whatever links I need to make. I add pictures (if necessary) as I write. When I’m all done, I enter a title. THEN, I choose a category, and a few tags. DONE!

5. Your blog requires a cute, new, mascot – what would it be?

A bowl of conch salad won’t do? Hmmm… A conch shell with two cowbells in front of it, all sitting on a goatskin drum. The spirit of Junkanoo. :)

6. Do you feel you express your “true self” on your blog?

Most definitely. I pull no punches. Punches are meant to be PUSHED! ;)

7. What is your biggest online pet-peeve?

Hmmm… Links that take me to somewhere stupid like Wikipedia when I think it’ll take me somewhere meaningful.

8. If you could live in a fictional universe, where would you live? Why?

Harrrrrd. *thinks super duper hard* Wonderland? Maybe.

9. You’re having a bad day, you’re upset, you’re angry, or you’re sad – what is your go-to comfort?

Tea and cuddles with my GF.

10. What is your favorite inspirational quote?

I don’t have a particular favourite inspirational quote, actually. There are different ones that I quite like, but none really stand out in my mind. I remember things my family has told me best. At some point, my dad said something to me like, “If it’s want you want, my will can’t stop you.” When I think of it, it reminds me that no one has a will (against me and what I want) that is great enough to stand up to my will.

11. If they were to make a movie based on your life, who would play you, your leading lady/man, your best friend, and your rival?

I never have an answer to this question. I’m terrible with names of actors and actresses. Terrible. I can’t even think of any who are the right age. *shrugs*

12. Do you think the world is going to end in 2012?

LOL. No. I’m not speculating at all. Whenever it ends, it ends. I don’t care when that is. I don’t understand why anyone cares. We have no control over it. Same as death. We should just focus on living our best lives while we’re here.

13. If you could change anything about yourself, what would it be?

Hmmm… Maybe I’d change how hungry I am all the time. LOL. I am the biggest snacker you will ever see. I eat 2-3 snacks between breakfast and lunch.

14. What is your favorite season and why?

I reeeeeally love autumn. It’s sooo beautiful. I love the colours, I love the weather, I love the autumn clothing… It’s great. Wanna know what really sucks though? I live in The Bahamas. We don’t get autumn. Just varying degrees of summer. Fun. -_-

15. You’ve been bitten by a vampire. Would you fight it with all your undead being or would you embrace it for all it is worth?

I’m lazy when it comes to battles that look like that can’t/won’t be won. I’d just go with it.

16. Have you personally met any of your blogger friends?

Not yet. I wanna meet pretty much all of them though. I have a LOT of cool blogger friends.

17. What does your favorite pair of underwear look like?

Gray bikini-style with sparkles. They’re my fancy pants. I wear them when I’m going somewhere formal-ish. *giggles*

18. Have you ever drank something right from the container in the refrigerator knowing other people will have to drink out of the same container later?

No. That is GROSS.

19. What is your favorite word and explain why?

I like a lot of words. It’s hard to think of ANY of them now. I am REALLY bad at thinking of things in categories like that when asked. I recognize them when seen or heard, but ask me my top 5 actresses, or my favourite song by Bob Marley or something… IDK! (Honestly, I DO know my fave song by Bob. It’s “Is This Love,” hands down.) One of my favourite words is “abyssmal.” It only took me about 5 minutes to think of it.

20. 2011 is soon coming to a close, is there anything you’d like to do different on your blog in the year 2012?

Not much, really. I guess I could make it look more fun and fanciful with pictures. I just hate using pictures from the internet. That’s so lame. Hopefully, I’ll get a camera soon, so I can start taking my own pictures again. Then, I’ll have a folder of just random pictures that I can use to prettify my blog posts. Good plan, right?

The creator of this blog, Tom Baker hosted a meme-like event this past weekend. People from all over the globe took part in answering 20 questions about themselves and their blogs. All of the answers were posted at the very same time across the time zones with a few exceptions (glitches). The meme itself was designed to bring bloggers closer together. To make the world even smaller, if only for a few hours.

The day was spent with each blogger visiting blogs they had never been to before and responding to comment after comment after comment. I took part in Tom’s meme last year and it was a lot of fun. A whole lot of fun! Reading the responses to the questions gave a little insight into the personality of the blog owner all at once. It was an experience that might take weeks, months or even years to learn by just reading on post at a time on their blogs.

I give Tom credit. He is always coming up with new ways for people of various backgrounds, races, religions to unconsciously forget all of that for the moment and just socialize with one another. To just be friendly if not grow into a new friendship. In its own way it was a cultural event and it crossed my mind that Flavor Internationale is the same thing. It’s a global ‘think tank’ of sorts where everyone is welcome.

If you get the chance stop by Tom’s blog and read his responses to the questions and then go on to another random blog and read those answers. Leave a comment, and so on, and so on until you have visited and commented on all the blogs that participated.

The next meme is scheduled for July 2012. Consider being a part of it. There are no boundaries in this community…

One day, while I was looking up…

I walked into a rock gym for my first climbing lesson. I walked in to a place I knew no one, alone. I took a solo lesson best shared with a partner. I was shy, nervous, and scared. I looked at my feet because it’s my thing. I answered quietly when my instructor asked questions, unsure of what I was doing, not fully understanding the things he was saying. I felt stupid. That stupid you feel the first time you do anything, when you think this is awful, you will never get it, it will never makes sense and you will always feel this stupid so you are never doing this again.

Then the instructor tied me to a rope and told me to climb the wall. It was the hardest climb ever, the wall was a million feet high, the things (*rocks*) I was to use to get up there were the smallest things I had ever seen, and the only help I had to get me from the bottom to the top was ME.

I was about to fail miserably. There was no way I was strong enough, brave enough, courageous enough, or smart enough to find my way to the top of that climb. Ten minutes later, I was reaching that last hold and turning to look down at the ground merely 35 feet below. I did it. I had no idea.

That first time was scary. Not because I was climbing ever farther from the solid earth I had grown to love so dearly but because I was forced to put absolute trust in one thing: ME. At that time in my life, I wasn’t sure if I was worth it. Would I just be a horrible disappointment? I had to trust me and it was hard. The instructor did an amazing (terrifying) thing then; he handed me a blindfold. I had been climbing for a total of 70 minutes of my life and now I was supposed to do it blindfolded? It was trust by fire. Without judgments about the shapes, texture, and sizes of the hand and foot-holds or my ability to use them properly, I had only to feel, trust, and move. It’s amazing what can be accomplished when you aren’t telling yourself why you can’t accomplish it before you even try.

That was over 4 years ago.

Before I walked into that gym I doubted my strength, my courage, my beauty. Climbing has taught me about being a woman. A strong, powerful, sexy, beautiful woman.

I stumbled upon this on Tumblr a few moments ago. Just to get it out in the open, I don’t normally bother reacting to things I see there. I just simply reblog, like or ignore. However, when I see statements that I feel strongly about, I can’t help it. I have to say something.

“Something in the past created them, and sometimes it’s impossible to fix them.”

Here are a few things. Yes, an experience creates a person’s perception of things making him who he is today. However, there is a difference between letting that experience define you regardless if you are helpless or not and letting your decision as a reaction to that experience make you. You still have control over who you want to be and how you intend to see things. It’s your decision to be depressed and it’s your decision to put the past behind you, move on and be happy. I know it’s not easy as it sounds because believe me, I’ve been there but taking an extra effort to rise beyond your circumstances is a much more beautiful story than one that is just solely based on a person who just let things happen to them.

Yes, every person has their own story – some happy, some sad but they can act differently unless they choose not to. I had a pretty twisted history, too but I did not let that get to me. I did for the most part of my middle school and high school which then led to more bad decisions but there comes a point in one’s life when you realize that you have got to be more than who you are now because of what you’ve been through. And when one goes through that, that’s when you start getting up and moving forward.

Yes, something in the past made us into who we are but we can choose to not just be a living and breathing replica of our past. It is in our hands whether we want to remain the same or not.

And yes, some may be impossible to fix only because they refuse to be fixed or they haven’t realized yet that they need fixing. It’s not about letting others “fix you”, it’s about helping yourself so you could be better.

What about you? What do you think about this statement?

Featured photo taken by me using the iPhone 4. Post processing with Instagram.
